Ingredients

For the French Fries
  • 2 lbs frozen crinkle-cut french fries
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (if air frying)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Beef Mixture
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef 80/20 or 85/15
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
For the Cheese and Toppings
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup dill pickle slices chopped
  • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes halved (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
  • Extra ketchup and mustard for serving

Equipment

  • Large oven-safe baking dish (9x13 inch or similar)
  • Large Skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Air Fryer (Optional)
  • Aluminum Foil

Method

Prepare Fries & Oven
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). If using an air fryer for crispier fries, preheat it to 375°F (190°C) according to manufacturer's instructions. Spread the frozen fries in a single layer on a baking sheet or in the air fryer basket. Toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper if air frying.
  2. Bake fries in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or air fry for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, tossing halfway through. They don't need to be fully cooked through yet, just getting crispy.
Cook Beef Mixture
  1. While fries are cooking, heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced yellow onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder into the browned beef. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Stir in the ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and let simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Assemble and Bake
  1. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread half of the crispy fries evenly on the bottom of the dish.
  2. Spoon the seasoned ground beef mixture over the fries. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese over the beef.
  3. Top with the remaining fries, then sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
  4. Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
Garnish & Serve
  1. Let the bake rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped dill pickles, cherry tomatoes, fresh parsley, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds, if desired. Serve hot with extra ketchup and mustard on the side.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture. Feel free to customize with your favorite burger toppings like bacon bits, sliced jalapeños, or a drizzle of special sauce (mayo, ketchup, relish). Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
