Chinese Pepper Steak

  • 1 lb beef sirloin thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 green onions chopped

Method
 

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced beef with 2 tablespoons soy sauce and cornstarch until coated. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned but not fully cooked. Remove from the wok and set aside.
  4. In the same wok, add onion, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes.
  5. Add garlic and ginger, cooking for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, and black pepper.
  7. Return the beef to the wok and pour the sauce mixture over it.
  8. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the beef and vegetables.
  9. Sprinkle chopped green onions on top before serving.

Notes

For a spicier version, add sliced chili peppers or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
