Ingredients

Butter Swim Biscuit Base
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp sugar optional, for slight sweetness
Sausage & Cheese Mix
  • 1/2 lb breakfast sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 9x9 inch baking dish
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Skillet

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Pour melted butter into the bottom of a 9x9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, cook and crumble the breakfast sausage until browned. Drain excess grease and set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine self-rising flour and sugar (if using). Stir in buttermilk until just combined — do not overmix.
  4. Fold in cooked sausage, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  5. Pour the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish. Spread evenly but do not stir the butter into the batter.
  6. Bake for 25–28 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing into squares. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle a bit of shredded cheese on top before baking. These biscuits reheat well and are great for meal prep breakfasts.
