Sourdough Chocolate Rolls

Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 3/4 cup milk warm
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Chocolate Filling
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method
 

  1. Mix sourdough starter, warm milk, sugar, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
  2. Add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise at room temperature for 4–6 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Mix cocoa powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, and chocolate chips in a small bowl.
  6. Roll dough into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Roll dough tightly into a log and cut into even rolls.
  9. Arrange rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise 1–2 hours.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake for 25–30 minutes until puffed and lightly golden.
  12. Cool slightly and serve warm.

Notes

These rolls are delicious plain or finished with a light vanilla glaze once cooled slightly.
