Ingredients
  

Sweet Potato Base
  • 4 cups mashed sweet potatoes about 4–5 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
Pecan Topping
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, melted butter, and chopped pecans to make the topping. Mix until crumbly.
  5. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the sweet potato layer.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

For a lighter version, reduce the sugar in the filling and substitute half the butter with applesauce. This dish can be prepared a day in advance — just assemble, refrigerate, and bake before serving.
